A horse-like, water spirit, known as the Kelpie, haunts the deep dark rivers of Scotland. Those unfortunate enough to encounter one of these shape-shifting creatures should take heed, and seek shelter when it begins its metamorphosis at the in-between, where water meets sky.
Once in its horse form, it seeks to mate with a mortal horse, and the Kelpie's offspring would be born with four golden wishing hooves, highly prized amongst the Scots.
Many a foolish person has tried to approach the Kelpie when grazing on the banks of the river it occupies. Seemingly docile, the Kelpie's serene mien lulls the person into a false sense of calm, then once within arms length it rears up and captures the person with its magical hooves, sucking the person under the surface of its river home until the human's lungs fill enough to drown. In addition, the Kelpie is reputed to lure small children into the water where they kill them with a blow from their hooves, and then proceed to eat them.Infamously regarded as malevolent spirits of the dead, Kelpies are not munificent creatures, and only come to the surface to mate or hunt. Accounts of the Kelpie abound, and parents impart the stories to their children as cautionary tales. Nonetheless, many children continue to be drawn in by the creature despite these warnings, and speculation runs high as to the method the Kelpie uses to ensnare a child.
The Scots believe the Kelpie exhibits a superior intellect, and encourages the kids to ride on its back by extending one leg out, and bowing low in their presence. Once the unsuspecting child climbs on, the sticky adhesive in the Kelpies hair, bonds the child to its back, and without preamble, the horse drags the wayward child into the depths of the river, where they devour everything except the heart and liver. It is bandied the length and breadth of Scotland, that the MacGregor's are the only clan capable of subduing the Kelpie. The clan elder is said to have in his possession, a golden bridle fashioned by Artemis, the goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals. Once the Kelpie is restrained, he is instantly soothed, easily managed, and carted off to a remote river or mountain stream, where it can run wild without causing harm.
Of course, before that can happen, the MacGregor will have to catch the Kelpie first.

Other bits of info: - Spoiler:
However when you approached the offspring it would suck you in and drowned you in the nearest body of water. Also said to help water mils and dispose of trash in the sea. Kelpies may hate humans for ruining their home. It is said that one who mentions Christ's name after being trapped will be thrown off the horse.
Commonly known as spirits of the dead, Kelpies are not benevolent creatures and some folklore even says that they will not come unless called or summoned, or to eat.
*There was one way in which a Kelpie could be defeated and tamed - the Kelpies' power of shape shifting was said to reside in its bridle, and anybody who could claim possession of it could force the Kelpie to submit to their will. A Kelpie in subjugation was highly prized, it had the strength of at least 10 horses and the endurance of many more, but the faery races were always dangerous captives, especially those as malignant as the Kelpie. It was said that the MacGregor clan were in possession of a Kelpies bridle, passed down through the generations from when one of their clan managed to save himself from a Kelpie near Loch Slochd.*
